My computer is sick.

First it had a virus (which FOUR different virus-scans failed to kill)... now Windows won't boot. At all.

I foresee many hours with an Ubuntu CD and an external hard drive, if I want to recover my data. (And since I do not want to lose all of my digital art and photos and old writing, I'll have to.) Sigh.

Edit: A winner is me! IT'S ALIIIIIIIVE!

I'm still not convinced my computer is completely clear, and am posting from a laptop right now, but the process of sorting through my files and figuring out what to back up will hopefully be easier and faster.

For future reference ... DiskGetor is an AWESOME data recovery program (www.diskgetor.com). They had a trial you can download and then run to see what it can recover, then it's $69 that you have to pay to actually recover the data. I had a MAJOR computer crash this summer that affected both of my hard drives and this program recovered EVERYTHING!!! (except that which I had encrypted ... so, if you have any encrypted data, be sure to save the key somewhere so you can recover it if you have another crash ... the Windows website has the instructions on how to do this). Also, the program can recover data from a reformatted drive. It totally saved my butt! :)

Awesome, thanks! I'll definitely keep that in mind. :D
Something like that would be super helpful if I make a mistake and reformat the wrong drive. (I did that once, a long time ago. It was sad.)

This time my hard drive was basically fine, but the virus had corrupted some Windows system files. I was able to replace the broken ones from a backup, so it's working again, but apparently the infection is some kind of nasty backdoor trojan and everything I read about it suggests that it's nearly impossible to tell if the machine is still compromised in some way.

All of my personal data should be backed up now; I just need to give it another once-over before I reformat and reinstall Windows.
